Day 1: Gobeklitepe (L)
We will meet you in Sanliurfa Gap Airport and drive to Gobekli Tepe which is one of the world’s most important archaeological sites. Gobeklitepe, Neolithic site near Sanliurfa in southeastern Turkey. The site, believed to have been a sanctuary of ritual significance, is marked by layers of carved megaliths and is estimated to date to the 9th–10th millennium BCE. At 12,000 years old, it was built before the advent of writing or pottery and is believed to be the world’s oldest temple which is causing archaeologists to rethink their vision of early human history. In excavated site you will see a number of T-Shaped limestone megaliths, some of which surpass 16 feet (5 meters) in height and weigh as much as 50 tons, are arranged in circular formations. After a tour roughly 2 hours you will drive 30 min to Sanliurfa city. Sanliurfa is a city of huge religious significance, believed to be the birthplace of the prophet Abraham/Ibrahim, and the site of one of the most important events in the Bible and the Quran. Sanliurfa, with its wealth of Biblical associations, is known as the “Jerusalem of Anatolia” and regarded as a holy site by Jews, Christians and Muslims alike. According to the Old Testament, the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), “The Father of Three Monotheistic Religions”, was born in the city of Ur and he, together with his family, migrated to Harran- the “Home of the Patriarchs”. Christianity reached Edessa about 150 CE, and the city became the seat of what was soon the most important bishopric in Syria. A sizable body of early Christian literature in the Syriac language was produced at Edessa. In Urfa city center you will visit Sanliurfa Archology museum and Haleplibahce Mosaic Museum which are very important museums.
After these visits, you will arrive to hotel and overnight.
Day 2: Harran (L)
After breakfast in hotel, you will drive to Harran, Roman Carrhae, ancient city of strategic importance, now a village. It lies along the Balikli River, 24 miles (38 km) southeast of Urfa. The town was located on the road that ran from Nineveh to Carchemish and was regarded as of considerable importance by the Assyrian kings. Its chief cult in Assyrian times was that of the moon god. It is frequently mentioned in the Bible (Genesis 11:31–32). The Bible records that Abraham lived here and his father, Terah, died here. Harran is known for its interesting cone and cubic shaped dwellings and contains ruins of the oldest university in this region. Here in Harran, you visit this cone shaped houses and take photo with traditional clothes.
